Lawton Police Lt. John Schwenk said the accident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday when an ambulance traveling south on Sheridan Road was struck by a pickup, which had run the red light at Gore Boulevard.
The impact flipped the ambulance onto its side and caused it to slide into the traffic light on the southwest corner of the intersection.
The two paramedics in the ambulance suffered minor injuries, but were not taken to the hospital. The driver of the pickup did not suffer injuries, but was taken into custody.
“Witnesses at the scene said he had the red light when he went through the intersection,” Schwenk said. “He was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence.”
After the scene was cleaned and traffic resumed, drivers found themselves at a four-way stop. The remaining lights are blinking red.
Police are continuing to monitor the traffic at the scene, but Schwenk advises motorists to avoid the area, if possible.
Crews will be out at the scene as soon as they can, but it might be at the first of the work week.
“This is definitely creating a traffic hazard out there,” he said. “People just need to avoid that area until we get it fixed. They’re going to get out there as soon as they can. But obviously the pole is gone, so it’s going to have to be replaced.”
Another ambulance was dispatched to the original accident. Schwenk did not believe the delayed response created any serious issues.
The driver of pickup should have been more careful, a delayed response by ambulance might have caused serious issues. Now he need to consider these DUI charges seriously.
