A Lawton family is hoping that an early Independence Day liberation of its van will conclude with the return of the ride and the revocation of the thief’s freedom.
Matthew Eccles said his bronze-colored 2009 Honda Odyssey with a Fort Sill sticker on the front window and a firefighter decal on the back was stolen from the driveway of the family home in the 6800 block Northwest Crestwood Drive shortly before 2 a.m. He said he captured the theft on the home security camera.
Eccles said he and his wife had gone outside Thursday morning to begin celebrating the holiday when they noticed the van was missing. He said he checked the security footage and watched images of a man getting into his van and backing it out of the driveway.
“We have both sets of keys and don’t know how they stole it,” Eccles said. “I would recommend everyone getting a security camera for their homes.”
The security video shows two men walking house to house and going through neighbors’ cars around 1:45 a.m. before one walked up the drive and got into the van, Eccles said. The second man entered the van after it was pulled into the street.
Eccles said the man who took the van appears to be in his late teens or early 20s and it appears he has a tattoo on his left forearm. He was wearing an American Eagle T-shirt and a baseball cap.
The former fire chief for the Cove Acres volunteer department, Eccles said he and his family moved into Lawton in the last year. He said he was glad he and his wife decided to install the security cameras and recommended them for anyone, whether in Lawton or one of the surrounding communities.
“I want my car back, and people need to know we work hard for what we have,” Eccles said.
